The urgent question of this book is this: "DO YOU PRAY?" Ryle asks it so many times that I lost count. Instead of counting, I became overwhelmed with the conviction that so many times what I have thought was "true prayer" in my life was really lack-luster attempts at controlling God. At times, do I truly come to the throne of God in prayer? Of course. But, do I pray regularly with with the fervency, urgency, and desperation that Ryle describes of true pray-ers in this book? I have read quite a few books on prayer. This short book, written about a century ago, is one of the better ones. This is because not only does it tell you what true prayer is, but motivates the reader to actually pray. I strongly recommend this book!
There are very few good books on prayer out there today. I consider this book to be one of them because J.C. Ryle questions are normal paradigms. He asks "Do you pray?" After asking if you pray he questions the motives and intent of the prayer. It is a very clear and concise book on how and why we should pray. It has changed the way I view prayer and by extension it has helped to give me an even higher view of God.
This little volume is an excellent primer on prayer. J.C. Ryle is direct, impassioned, and convicting as he addresses Christians on the importance and practice of prayer. The book is direct, well reasoned, founded on Scripture, and addresses readers in a personal and didactic way. I highly recommend this work for Christians seeking to learn more about prayer as well as much needed motivation and encouragement.

Thanks again for this tract that highlighted my own errors in living, this meaning not enough prayer time. I do however enjoy the privilege of speaking to my Savior, thus will be more diligent.
Bishop of Liverpool, J.C. Ryle (1816-1900), had a way of putting things and a way of teaching the Scriptures that really just made them snap home. He held nothing back in his preaching but always laid out plain Scriptural truth with deep application.
That same boldness and passion for the Lord Jesus Christ comes across plain and clear in his tract, "A Call to Prayer".
At only 33 pages in length, this is one of the most powerful works on prayer that I've ever read. He opens it up simply with one question that drives the rest of his thoughts. "Do you pray?"
A simple question, yet is there anything that is more intimate in the life of a believer than their prayer life?
I absolutely love this little book. It is like trying to drink water from a fire hose though. There is so much to learn that I can keep reading it over and over and learn something new, or have some new insight into Christian prayer life. I love giving this as a little gift as well. I like to keep a few on hand just in case.
Though written in an old style (it IS an older booklet) the truth contained in this short book is as relevant today as ever. Prayer is needed and prayer is lacking.
This is not exactly a "how to" book, though it does contain many practical examples. The book is exactly what its title says, a call to the reader to increase and strengthen prayer in his/her own life.
Ryle gives many reasons to do so and roots them firmly in scripture, as he should. I found myself inspired to do what he urges as I read. Seeing the benefits and importance of prayer so clearly laid out was helpful.
