The year is 1800 Naples & Venice - where sensual steamy liaisons occur!

Amidst a gathering of nobility and gentry a daring jewel theft occurs. A young naval lieutenant suggests the notorious Venetian jewel thief could well be a woman, but a beautiful Russian countess scoffs at his suggestion albeit in coquettish manner. Determined to unmask the identity of the thief, at the same time intrigued by the countess, Lt Herne covertly follows Therese around Naples. But where the countess treads murders occur with frequency and she suddenly takes flight to Venice.

Ordered to the Adriatic on naval business Herne drops anchor in Venice. Tempted ashore by Carnivale a second encounter with the countess proves fatal for both. Madly in love they indulge in pleasurable pursuits but become embroiled in the mysterious death of a Russian count, and Therese feels duty bound to return to St Petersburg. Herne awaits her promised return to no avail. Three years later and back in England he discovers the countess on his doorstep, and wonders if he dare let his heart rule his head again? Equally, Therese fears a secret is best kept secret but Herne asks a potent question and she cannot lie for the truth is staring him in the face!

Venetian Encounter eBook Francine Howarth

Great characters, history well integrated into story, adventurous and enjoyable. She is in Naples to begin with. Then in Venice, St. Petersburg and finally England. Didn't care much for Petra. Napoleon Bonaparte is around somewhere.

Venetian Encounter eBook Francine Howarth Reviews

I must admit to not being very cognisant of historical romance novels and that genre, but this Venetian Encounter was quite the eye-opener. Heavens ... now I know why they are so popular!

A very well written story with a lot of charming elements. In addition to the excellently recreated period atmosphere, there is intrigue, suspense, crime and quite a few surprises to keep the reader wanting to know how it all turns out. I am not fond of the description “a page turner” but, in essence, that is exactly what this book is. It's a lot of fun, with a fair bit of hot, descriptive, bedroom action.

A thoroughly enjoyable read, with loads of action, and a writing style that fluidly carries the reader deeper into the plot. The characters are well developed and likeable, and the ending is very satisfying. Recommended for lovers of historical romance with lots of action and steamy love scenes.
I hate to criticize a writer's efforts but....This book has a marginally interesting plot, though easily discernible and reminiscent of an old Sherlock Holmes plot, only watered down. The characters didn't really grab me and the tempo dragged and stalled more than I could really deal with so I was left skimming over some parts and overall found the book itself a bit boring. It's not a total washout, there is some witty dialogue, and if there's nothing else you're reading it'll kill a couple of forgettable hours.
Enjoyed the language. It helped in painting the pictures in my mind.
This book had a decent premise and I appreciate the attempt at an unusual setting and storyline. There is also some witty dialogue, as another reviewer mentioned. HOWEVER, and this is a huge however, this book seriously needs editing. There are so many dropped words and, sometimes unnecessary words, that the sentences become hard to read. For example "Clearly willing to take to the seat held ready, sudden tilt of her head implied the brim of her hat to be a masterful application of instant mask to shield her face from view..." It almost reads as if the author wrote the book in another language and then plugged it into Google translate. Since I got it for free I can't complain, but if I'd paid for it I'd at least expect the author to have it proofread. I'd be hesitant to buy another from this author in case I encountered the same frustrating issue.
loved the strong hero & heroine. the supporting characters were nicely developed. the story line takes us from Naples, to Venice, St Petersburg, & on to England. Emma, Lady Hamilton, Lord Nelson, & the King & Queen of Naples made appearances. the romance between the hero & heroine is warm, & develops to a nice burn during Carnival. totally enjoyed,& will be reading more Francine Howarth.
This is a quick afternoon Regency read. And following true to form, we are given a tale that touches all the bases to bring in a solid story by Ms. Howarth. We have our hero with a secret, and our heroine with an even greater one, that our hero's secret enables him to suss out. Others suggest that this might be a plot we have seen elsewhere but that is not so. Enough twists and turns, and historical fact and good fiction make this completely unique in every way.

Our Historical guest stars are caught right at the apex of a critical time in their lives so they serve as background and in such a way that they propel the story forward as well as giving us a very impressive glimpse into a period of history that we historians know exists but few delve into the last days of Lord Hamilton and his beautiful wife Emma (considered the most beautiful woman in the world in her day) as they are recalled from the court of the Kingdom of Naples.

It is Naples that we see up close, and Venice a little later that we get a very small taste of. Almost two books, but what takes place in Venice between our heroes is the culmination of their paths and handled with finesse and enticement that those who want to be a part of a good tumble will enjoy as the bantering our Beatrice and Benedict like heroes enter a physical stage that leaves them changed forever. And for the much needed culmination of their own character development that we have seen Ms. Howarth build chapter by chapter that makes the reader believe that this book may be much longer than it actually is.

Character is what drives a good tale and this does have it as I mentioned. We only lack a little when we jump ahead from Venice and what has occurred their to the end, seeming to rush where even more depth could have been painted in with greater detail, but big broad bold strokes have been applied and our heroes stand on these additions to their traits. But the reader does wonder, what might Ms. Howarth have given should we have seen another chapter or two before the adorable conclusion of adoration.
Great characters, history well integrated into story, adventurous and enjoyable. She is in Naples to begin with. Then in Venice, St. Petersburg and finally England. Didn't care much for Petra. Napoleon Bonaparte is around somewhere.
